The Vince Gironda Exercises

The following is a list of what Vince Gironda considered the best
exercise for each muscle group and that all other exercises were
only substitutes or variations.

Shoulders

Lateral Raise. Most bodybuilders have over developed front delts
from doing the bench press, and overhead press, but it's the side
or lateral part of the delt that really creates shoulder width.
The lateral raise builds the side delt and sculpts wide shoulders.

Chest

Dips on a parallel bar that is 33" wide, if it is not you will not
receive the intended benefit from this movement. Anything wider
or narrower will not work the pecs as desired. The most important
execution of the movement is in the elbows: They must be wide and
straight out from the shoulders. The head has to be in a down
position with the chin resting on the upper chest and the back
should be rounded forward.

Back

Lat Pulls. In order for this movement to produce the intended
results you must use a pulley that is 6' off the ground. Most
lat machines and triceps machines are too high to get the
desired results. If you do not have access to a machine or
facility with a pulley 6' off the ground you can use a regular
lat machine but it will not be the same

Triceps

Triceps rope pulldown. Reach back over your head and grab the
ends of a knotted rope attached to the pulley and cable. With
the elbows and head resting on the bench, pull to arms length
and lockout. When you let the rope back to the starting
position make certain your hands touch the upper back.

Biceps

Vince Gironda Barbell curl. Start by resting your elbows on
your pelvis or hip bones and your body inclined with head and
shoulders in back of the hips. As the barbell is curled the
first 10 or 12 inches start moving the body, head and
shoulders, forward until your body is in erect position.
Then as you continue to curl the barbell incline your body,
head and shoulders, forward and complete the movement with a
forceful contraction of the biceps. Now reverse the sequence
as you lower the barbell to the starting position. It should
take you about 6 seconds to perform one curl.

Thighs

Thigh squat. "But I thought Vince was opposed to squats?" He
was, at least the way one would normally perform the movement.
Start the movement as you would a front squat, with the bar
high on the chest resting on the front of the delts. Place
your heels about 12 inches wide and on a 2 x 4. From this
position begin your descent but keep your hips forward and
under your shoulders at all times. As you rise up, the hips
move forward until they are well out in front of the body.
In the top position your knees should remain bent and your
hips out in front of your shoulders and your shoulders over
your heels.

Calves

Calf raise. For this movement, it will be assumed you have
access to a standing calf machine. If you do not you can use
a belt and chain and hang a dumbbell between your knees.
Place the ball of your feet and toes on a block 3" tall.
Feet are to be placed parallel, 4 inches apart. Keep your
knees slightly bent throughout the movement. As you rise up
on your toes, bring your heels together and place the full
load on your big toe and the toe next to it. Contract
forcefully and lower all the way down for a full stretch.

Abdominals

Frog sit ups. Lie flat on your back and draw your heels up
under your hips wide and out to the sides like a frog.
Place your hands with a barbell plate behind your head.
Curl the head down with the chin to the chest as the
shoulders round forward curling the upper body until
only the small of the back remains in contact with the
floor.

2008 IFBB Arnold Classic Preview: The Dominican Dominator’s Back

Victor Martinez’s passion for muscles started at an early age when he read comic books and spent a lot of time drawing super heroes with large muscles. The Incredible Hulk and wrestling’s Hulk Hogan were among his favorites to sketch.

As a teenager Martinez was always competing in sports such as baseball, basketball, football, and tennis. Weight training was an easy transition for him to make, and bodybuilding was the natural next step. By the age of 24 Martinez won his first amateur bodybuilding contest, six years later he won his first professional contest. He’s competed at the Arnold Classic four times, bettering his placing each time and in 2007 he won first place. Now he’s considered by many as the favorite to win the 2009 Arnold Classic.

Martinez took 2008 off from competition due to an injury to his knee he received while training. “It’s difficult to make a comeback after an injury. I had to change my training habits and restructure my workouts. I’m not afraid to try new creative things. I stay positive and know I’ll overcome the challenge,” Martinez said.

When asked what other sports going on at the Arnold Sports Festival interested him Martinez quickly admits he enjoys martial arts. “Successful bodybuilders and martial artists need the same high level of discipline,” he says. “I like watching (mixed martial arts fighters) Wanderlei Silva and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson because of the energy they have in the ring,” he added.

Jason Dhir’s 6th Annual Arnold Charity After-Bash Mega-Party

Where Kings and Legends reside…

Jason Dhir Presents, the 6th Annual Charity After-Bash MEGA-PARTY.

Just when you thought you have seen all the extreme nightlife Columbus Ohio has to offer, emerging from its slumber is Jason Dhir’s 6th Annual Charity After-Bash Mega-Party. BOMA (Bar of Modern Art) has been selected to be the official location for his March 7, 2009 Mega-Party, and all who have entered any of the extravagant rooms of BOMA’s four levels, will agree that Dhir has made the perfect choice. BOMA’s ambiance coupled with Dhir’s indescribable talent for producing some of the most unforgettable entertainment the sporting, or any other industry has ever witnessed, is just one reason to attend this year’s After-Bash. Dhir has not only promised party goers a Live 1am show in BOMA’s Main room but to keep you guessing has entitled it “HYSTERIA and the HYPER-DOME!” Although, little is known of the HyperDome, Jason swears that it’s never been executed to this capacity, and his Mega-Party, held Saturday after the Arnold Classic will be an industry first for all in attendance.

Dhir, also well known for his incredible use of mind blowing laser and light techniques, plans to fill BOMA with intense visual stimulation and dance all night, musical accompaniment. Also featured is a live Chainsaw Ice Fountain Carving, an enormous outdoor projection screen, a celebrity “Make a Wish” charity check presentation, and Dhir’s very own “Candy Land” creation. Included on Jason’s coveted guest list are many Pro-Athletes from all walks of the sporting industry as well as some featured celebrities, and other famous faces from the Sports Nutrition Industry. Which makes it no surprise that the most powerful Sports Nutrition and supplement companies, media, and distributors such as, Europa Sports and Weider Publications will be sponsoring the event.

Some of the past year’s After-Bash celebrity guests have included, Wesley Snipes, WWE superstar Triple H, NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen, “Sunset Tan” reality vixens “The Olly Girls,” and eight -time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman. Dhir has boasted that his upcoming Mega-Party will include a yet undisclosed celebrity host, which is guaranteed to properly kick off the night’s festivities.

Jason Dhir believes that this event will forever change the standard of any post Arnold Classic after parties and has stated “I created the Mega-Party for our entire industry to partake, I have given everything I have to building this event, and I will take this year’s Mega-Party to a new standard in after hours gatherings beyond anything I have ever done and untouchable to my competitors…there is only one Mega-Party in Columbus on March 7, 2009 and it has my name on it.”

BOMA is located on 583 E. Broad St. in Columbus Ohio and doors open at 10pm. Dress code is firmly enforced and all VIP attendees must be wearing the wristband of the Sponsor Company that has provided the VIP area they wish to enter.

Tickets for Jason Dhir’s 6th Annual Charity After-Bash Mega-Party can be purchased on GrooveTickets and additional information can be found on JasonDhir.com.

IFBB Figure Pro Jenny Lynn Is Climbing Mountains

Some years are just better than others. As the last volley of fireworks split the skies over Jenny Lynn's New Year celebrations this year she wasn't necessarily ringing in a new year filled with promises of hope and prosperity. She wasn't even thinking of 2009 yet. For her 2008 was so surreal, so absolutely devastating at times that when she donned her paper hat and raised a noise maker to her trembling lips at midnight it was in near disbelief that she got out of 2008 at all.

When you are standing on the very top of a mountain there are two inexorable truths you come to know; the first is that you have just become the easiest and most visible target for virtually everyone, the second is that you have no place to go but down. Being the absolute best in the planet at anything is the ultimate achievement for an athlete, but it can be a cold and unforgiving place.

When Jenny Lynn strode on stage at the 2008 Figure Olympia, admittedly off the mark, but still very much an Olympian and still very much one of the best in the world, the immediate reaction by the media, the fans, and even many of those close to her was a unanimous “What the hell happened?”

That was the most loaded question in 2008 Pro Figure history but the question never got answered, because no one cared to ask the questions, and Jenny didn’t care to put it out there to have her life be kicked around like a soccer ball.

How Strict Should Your Exercise Form Be?

When it comes to weight training there are generally 2 schools of thought when it comes to exercise form.

First you have the typical personal trainer "fitness experts" who say you should perform all lifts with light to moderate weights and use very slow and controlled movements.

Then you have the power and strength athletes who like to use more explosive movements, looser training form, and lift heavier weights.

Which one is right and which one should you use in your training?

Bikini Clad Female Bodybuilder vs. A Rubik's Cube

Apparently this is some kind of viral video for Ray-Ban featuring a bikini clad female bodybuilder solving a Rubik’s cube.

Only, if you look at it really close, the video is running backwards and she didn’t really solve the Rubik’s cube, it just made to look like she did.

It’s kinda weird, but worth checking out.
