Afghan Muscles

One of the Total Fitness Bodybuilding forum members posted this a little while ago and I wanted to re-post it here on my blog, just in case you never seen it on the forum.

"Afghan Muscles" is kind of like a Middle Eastern version of Pumping Iron, but it shows a much harsher reality side of things. In a country ravaged by war, these men still hold on to their dreams of muscle, honor and fame in a world of chaos. From the dusty ruins of Kabul to the skyline of Dubai we follow the bodybuilder Hamid's heroic struggle to win the championships and thereby create a better life for himself and his clan. But nothing goes as planned…

This is a trailer clip of the documentary below:

I watched it on youtube and I've posted the links below so you can check it out yourself. It is touching story, yet kind of depressing at the same time, to see the struggles that these guys go through day to day.

It really puts things in perspective, a lot of the minor things that most of us complain about here in North America is nothing compared to the hardships these guys have to deal with.

The video is divided up into a series of 7 small 8-10 minute segments that you can watch below:

An Interview With Protein Legend Rheo H. Blair

Charles Welling is writing a book on Hollywood nutritionist Rheo H. Blair. He writes about his research at rheohblair.blogspot.com. If you are interested in learning more about Rheo H. Blair, please read Charles’ blog to find out more about this amazing man.

How did you meet Rheo Blair and how was your relationship with him?
CW: It began with Rheo’s frequent guest appearances on ABC Television’s A.M. Los Angeles with Regis Philbin in the late 1970’s. His segments dealt with a variety of topics, healthy recipes which he demonstrated in the studio kitchen, exercises – he jumped on his mini trampoline once, etc. His most popular appearances were when he brought before and after photos of his students – blown up very large and mounted on foam board — whose bodies and health had been dramatically – and I mean dramatically — transformed under Blair’s guidance. These were remarkable, eye popping photographs of people, mostly young men, showing how they looked before Blair’s program and again a few weeks later after working with Blair. The photos and the stories of health transformation that went with them really got my mother’s attention whenever she saw Rheo on the show. You see I had been a sickly child and my parents did not know where to turn for help; they had tried several approaches. Finally, having seen many of his cases on Philbin’s show, my parents contacted Rheo and set up an appointment to speak with him at his home. I vividly recall that day, seeing all the before and afters and realizing that here was a program that could give me the health and vitality that had eluded me for so long. Rheo saw my interest and enthusiasm and immediately accepted me as a client – which was a stroke of great luck for me since he had a lengthy waiting list at any given time. I moved in with him two weeks later and stayed for several months during which time I was under his 24 hour care and tutelage. Each day I consumed several hundred grams of protein, supplements in the form of 500 capsules and pills – and again, this is each day. In addition I underwent three hours of blood circulation enhancing physical therapy treatments Monday through Friday, did a few minutes of light exercise and slept 12 to 16 hours a day. That, in a nutshell, was the Blair program that transformed my health and made me one of his before and afters.
The journey of healing during the transformation was, for the most part, very pleasant. Rheo and I got along well; indeed he was easy to get along with! Rheo was a people lover and people loved him. He was such a fascinating person; unlike anyone else I have ever met. He treated me very well and was generous with his time and attention. And there was always something interesting going on at his home. I can’t tell you how many Hollywood celebrities I met during my time there. It was a thrilling experience in so many ways.

What was Rheo H. Blair’s real name? Why did he change it?
CW: His given name was Irvin P. Johnson.

Common Muscle Building Mistakes

One of the main reasons why most lifters fail to achieve
rapid muscle gains is because they no not give their muscles
enough time to recover and then grow.

This is called overtraining.

Muscles only grow when they've had enough time and nutrients to
recover first and then grow.

A few signs that will tell you whether you're overtraining are:

1. You feel tired
2. You don't feel like training
3. You lose your appetite
4. You lose strength/muscle

If your lifting program involves any of the following it
will probably lead to overtraining:

1. More than 10 sets on any muscle group

Don't be confused by the huge guys in your gym that do 10 sets of
150 kg's on the bench press. These guys have either been working
out for a very long time or they're not using natural bodybuilding
techniques to achieve their extraordinary results.

2. More than 2 to 3 exercises for any muscle group

Let's say for example that you're training your chest. To not over
train your muscles and to work your entire chest you only need to
do the bench press and incline bench press. You do not also need
to do the pec deck and decline bench press. These extra exercises
will lead to overtraining.

3. Training sessions of greater than an hour

The ideal training program should consist of 5-6 exercises,
3-5 sets, and 6-8 and/or 10-12 reps. This should not take longer
than an hour. Push yourself any harder and you're likely to over
train your muscles.

4. Continually increasing the amount of sets performed

If in week one you do 3 sets, week 2, 4 sets, week 3, 5 sets,
week 4, 6 sets and continually increase sets performed your
muscles will eventually break down. The trick is to perform 3
sets in week 1, 4 sets in week 2, 5 sets in week 3 and then
revert back to 3 sets in week one.

5. Poor Nutrition

Your muscles need both positive balance of protein and calories
to grow. You should be eating eggs, milk, meats, fish, chicken,
etc., along with fresh fruits and vegetables.

6. Less than 8 hours sleep

Your body does most of its muscle building while you're sleeping.

Supplement Secrets True Story

I recently tired to place an ad for thebook "Bodybuilding
Supplement Secrets Revealed" in a major muscle magazine
and here is the response I got:

"After reviewing your ad and website, the publisher feels it is
in our best interests to not allow you to advertise with us.

+++++ +++++++
Advertising Manager
+++++++++ +++++++++++++"

They fully admitted that the only reason they were rejecting
the ad was to protect their own interests. They are saying if
people learned the truth about supplements, the magazine
would l ose money. In other words, since they sell
supplements, it is in the magazines best interests to keep
people in the dark about supplements.

I was a bit skeptical when I read the book and it told how
greedy the magazine/supplement company owners are and
how they fight to hide the truth, but this incident and others
like it have proved it to me.

Blast Your Bench Success Story

I just got this awesome e-mail the other day from one of my Blast Your Bench students that I wanted to pass along to you...

Hey Lee,

I had to write you and let you know that I just finished the 3 week Blast Your Bench program. And I have Great News, I packed on 40 lbs. to my bench in just 3 weeks!!

Here's a short back ground, I'm 37 yrs old, body weight 200 lbs., my 1 rep max was 175lbs. I've lifted before a few years ago and had fair results, But I hit a plateau and simply gave up. So this time I'd been lifting for a few months but didn't do much bench pressing because it wasn't my strong exercise.

Then I came across the Blast Your Bench program, I was very skeptical and I researched all I could find on you and this routine and after a couple weeks I thought:

"What the hell, it's less then 40 bucks and if it doesn't work I can get a refund".

So I began my 3 week bench blasting adventure...

And I took my bench from 175lbs. to 215lbs. in 3 short weeks, Lee I am not only extremely satisfied but you couldn't buy this routine back for triple the price! LOL

I've just started the 12 week routine of yours and I look forward to having you in my corner.

Thank you!
Rocky Bozarth
USA

If Rocky can break past his bench press plateau in just
a few short weeks, what kind of results can you get from
a "3 week Bench Blasting adventure" ?

Aspartame Rumors Unfounded

If you have spent anytime online, chances are you have stumbled on Web sites with screaming headlines and well written text attempting to scare Internet surfers about artificial sweeteners, especially Aspartame (NutraSweet), which is alleged by these doomsayers to cause all sorts of maladies, including methanol toxicity, vision problems, headaches, fatigue, brain cancer, lupus, and even multiple sclerosis. In fact, with the last year, millions of people have reported receiving ominous, official looking email messages about aspartame's alleged hazards.

In response, hundreds of readers have emailed, and written to many organizations, wondering if there is any validity to these doom and gloom messages, which are spreading like wildfire over cyberspace. So, to get to the bottom of this issue, we went straight to the top and asked the real experts - scientists who have actually investigated the effects of aspartame in 'clinical studies'. And what we discovered was that the overwhelming majority of these experts not only say these rumors are groundless, but that aspartame may actually be healthier than nature's natural sweetener: sugar - which, unlike aspartame, has been scientifically linked to numerous health problems, including osteoporosis, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and obesity - not to mention the time honored association between sugary foods and tooth decay.

According to officials at the Food and Drug Administration, the safety of aspartame is, in their words, "clear cut". The FDA calls aspartame one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives it has ever approved, adding that more than 100 toxicological and clinical studies it has reviewed confirm that aspartame is safe for the general population.

Agreeing with the FDA's stance on this issue are other health organizations such as the American Medical Association and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. In a report on the FDA's Web site, David Hattan, Ph/D., acting director of the FDA's division of health effects evaluation, says there is no "credible evidence" to support, for example, a link between aspartame and multiple sclerosis or systemic lupus. Dr. David Squillacote, senior medical advisor to the MS Foundation, agrees, telling Newsday that the claims "are rabidly inaccurate and scandalously misinformative."

Other circulating reports have linked aspartame with brain tumors. However, an analysis conducted by the FDA of the National Cancer Institute's public database on cancer incidence in the United States- the SEER Program-does not support an association between the use of aspartame and increased incidences of brain tumors or cancer. "Both our scientists and those at the National Cancer Institute have looked very carefully at brain-tumor trends," Dr. Michael A. Friedman, deputy commissioner for operations at the FDA and the Administration's senior adviser for science, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We find no association between aspartame consumption and human brain tumors."

Can Working Out Make You Smarter?

Working out will not only help you get bigger, stronger, and more muscular... But it will also help you get smarter as well!

That's what the research shows. There have been several studies done that show physical activity improves academic performance. One recent study done by the American College of Sports Medicine found that middle-school students in grades 6 through 8 who performed the best on various fitness tests which measured aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility, and body composition performed better academically as well.

Results from the study showed that the fittest students scored approx. 30% higher on standardized tests then the least fit students.

That's another huge benefit from working out and a good reason for people of all ages to make time for regular exercise in their schedules. You'll not only feel and look better physically, but you'll be at the top of your game mentally as well.

Our local paper even published a full page write up about the BJJ club with lots of pics, including a couple good shots of Patricia (the bottom two pics).

Do you workout when you have a cold?

I've been feeling a little bit under the weather lately. I've got a cough and a stuffy nose. For some reason I usually get a cold each winter. Now I know when most people get sick they tend to just sit around and wait for the cold to go away before they do anything physical.

But I find one of the best ways to feel better and help ease up some of the congestion is to get outside for some fresh air and easy cardio (i.e. go for a walk outdoors). Now obviously this is if your cold / flu is not too severe, you'll have to use your own judgment on this one. But me personally, I always feel a lot better after a walk outside.

So yesterday I bundled up with my winter coat, popped some ephedrine and caffeine to help give me an energy boost and took my dog Sasha out for a walk along some of the awesome walking trails we have here in Newfoundland. The dog loved it, and I enjoyed it as well and felt a lot better afterwards.

Four Russian Bodybuilders Buy Legendary Edison Gym

If you're familiar with Central Jersey gyms, there's one aspect of the Apollon Gym in Edison that will stand out immediately.

Members put away their weights.

"Just because a gym is hardcore doesn't mean there has to be dumbells all over the floor,'' said Apollon co-owner Robert Samborsky. "Apollon is a clean gym.''

A clean gym with very heavy weights. But don't let that discourage you.

"We have dumbells from three to 160 pounds, so you don't need to be a bodybuilder or a powerlifter to train here,'' Samborsky said. "There are people who have been training here 10, 20, 30 years and they don't go anywhere else --they call it home.''

Samborsky, along with wife Marina Samborsky and IFBB Pro Figure and IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Competitors Irina Veselova and Alex Fedorov, bought Apollon from its previous owner last January.

The gym dates back to 1975 and Samborsky and company wanted to change it as little as possible.

"It was in our best interest for me to buy the gym because not many people would know how to run this gym,'' Samborsky said. "It has a niche appeal -- I wanted to make sure it stayed true to its hardcore, no B.S. approach.''

Doctor Charged in Death of Bodybuilder Who Competed at 2007 Arnold

A bodybuilder who died after becoming ill at the Arnold Sports Festival in 2007 was among the clients of a doctor indicted in New York on charges of illegally selling steroids.

Dr. Richard Lucente of Staten Island was charged last week with 76 counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance to more than 200 clients from 2005 to 2007. That included 27 counts involving bodybuilder Joseph Baglio, who died of heart failure at Ohio State University Medical Center.

Lucente also was charged with reckless endangerment for providing Baglio with steroids, testosterone and growth hormone even though he knew that Baglio had a heart transplant in 2004 because of previous steroid use, prosecutors said.

Lucente pleaded not guilty and was released on $20,000 bail.

Defense attorney John Meringolo said there was no proof that Lucente did anything that contributed to Baglio's death.

Jim Lorimer, a partner in the festival with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said Baglio was not a competitor at the festival. Baglio was working in a booth for the company MET-Rx, which sells health foods and supplements, according to its Web site.

Get to the Bottom of Gold Standard 100% Casein™ with ON’s New E-Z Scoop Opening

What’s the difference between a 110 millimeter opening and one that’s 135 millimeters? The answer is how easy it is for big-armed strength athletes to get to the bottom of the sports nutrition industry’s best-selling casein protein. When it comes to sustained-release nighttime anti-catabolic support, Optimum Nutrition’s (ON) Gold Standard 100% Casein is, by far, the most popular choice.

Their all-micellar casein formula is highly anti-catabolic, meaning it helps minimize the naturally-occurring breakdown of muscle fibers after intense resistance training.

"This promotes the anabolic muscle rebuilding process that follow,” said Rachel Hopkins, a Food Scientist at ON’s Aurora research laboratory. “We think that the bodybuilders and strength athletes who’ve made Gold Standard 100% Casein number one will appreciate how easy it is to scoop those last few servings from the bottom of 4-pound containers.”

ON engineered the new E-Z Scoop Opening and retains all rights to this revolutionary container design. Consumers will find all flavors of Gold Standard 100% Casein sold this way including Creamy Vanilla, Chocolate Supreme, Cookies and Cream as well as Banana Cream.

Founded in 1987, Optimum Nutrition is a leading manufacturer of premium sports nutrition products. Recognized for both quality and innovation, the company maintains two distinct brands – Optimum Nutrition and American Body Building – and is distinguished by oversee every aspect of product formulation and production. ON’s Aurora manufacturing facility is NSF GMP Registered and AIB GMP Certified to assure consistently high quality standards.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Secret Training Methods

Arnold used muscle shocking methods "training with more w eight
than usual, doing more reps and/or sets, speeding up your
training (lifting becomes more forceful as a result), decreasing
the rest between sets, doing unfamiliar exercises, doing your
exercises in an unfamiliar order or using intensity techniques".
Try the methods below to shock you muscles into new growth.

Running The Rack

Training right in front of the dumbbell rack and is one of
Arnold's favorite ways to train with dumbbells to shock the muscles.
Do an exercise with a set of dumbbells, put them down, immediately
pick up the next heavier set of dumbbells and when you have reached
heaviest dumbbells you can handle you then work your way back down
the dumbbell rack.

I Go, You Go

Perform a set and right away hand the barbell to your training
partner. He then tries to beat your reps. Then, he hands it back
to you, and the process continues until you're both doing only
singles.

Drop Sets

Taking plates off the bar during the set as your muscles fatigue.
E.g.. bench press with 225 lbs. For 4-5 reps. As you fatigue at
rep 5 have your partners quickly take plates off the bar - so
that there's 200 lbs - And you can now do more reps.

Isotension

Flexing and contracting the muscles being worked between sets.
Flexing is a beneficial in hardening, separating and defining
each muscle group.

Mega Exercise Blitz

Instead of doing five sets of one exercise for a muscle, do one
set of just about every exercise you know for that muscle. For
example, do one set of standing barbell curls, then incline curls,
dumbbell curls, preacher curls, cable curls and, finally,
concentration curls.

Supersets

Arnold often employed opposite muscle grouping sets (biceps with
triceps, chest with back, etc.) to force as much blood as humanly
possible a target area for superior growth.

Bodybuilding Talk Show Replay Posted.

I just posted up the replay of the live Total Fitness Bodybuilding Talk Show at:

http://www.LeeHayward.com/tv

The video and MP3 audio of the show will be up for the next 24 hours. After that they will be added to the Total Fitness Bodybuilding "Inner Circle" members area.

Modified 300 Workout - Thursday Feb. 19

I'm still working around my nagging pulled chest muscle so for my last workout I messed around with a modified 300 workout program.

Note: I posted a video clip of the actual 300 workout on youtube a while back.

This is the workout I did...

Rather then doing chins I did Bodyweight Rows 25 total reps.

Deadlifts 50 total reps with 135 lbs.

Push Ups 50 total reps.
(Note: I did these with a close grip and leaning against a bench with my body at a 45 degree angle to reduce stain on my pec.)

Box Jumps 50 total jumps.

Rather then floor wipers holding a barbell, I just did decline bench sit ups for 50 total reps.

Rather then doing dumbbell clean and press, I did seated shoulder presses with 95 lbs. for 50 total reps. (Less stretch on the chest.)

Finished up with another 25 bodyweight rows.

Benefits of Cinnamon Bark

What Is Cinnamon Bark?

Cinnamon Bark comes from a small evergreen tree (Cinnamomum verum),
that is native to India and Sri Lanka, where it has been
traditionally used as a spice.

Cinnamon bark is a very common ingredient in products such as
toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum, and soft drinks. Also many
feel it it helpful in handling certain ailments and other issues.
Herbalists recommend cinnamon bark to help with digestive problems,
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, asthma brought on by cold, backache,
menstrual problems, etc.

Cinnamon Bark Benefits

Cinnamon’s health benefits come from the fact that the bark
contains antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, antispasmodic, and
anti fungal properties that help to prevent infection by killing
decay-causing bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Cinnamon bark is helpful in supporting the digestive system.
Research reports that cinnamon bark helps break down fats in the
digestive system, making it a valuable digestive aid.

A traditional stimulant in Chinese medicine, cinnamon bark has a
thermogenic effect on the body.

Other conditions which are said to be improved by cinnamon bark
include fevers and colds, coughs and bronchitis, infection and
wound healing, some forms of asthma, and even blood pressure
reduction.

Cinnamon Bark Blood Sugar Control

Cinnamon bark is also known to control blood sugar levels.

Cinnamon may help improve the bodies ability to respond to
insulin, thus normalizing blood sugar levels. Both test tube
and animal studies have shown that compounds in cinnamon not
only stimulate insulin receptors, but also inhibit an enzyme
that inactivates them, thus significantly increasing bodies
ability to use glucose.

Cinnamon Bark Weight Loss

Lowering blood sugar levels and helping combat insulin
resistance can be very helpful in weight loss. The fat cells
of the abdomen can be particularly sensitive to high insulin,
because abdominal fat cells are so close to your digestive
system, and do to the extensive blood vessels in the abdominal
area, it’s easy for abdomen fat cells to store excess glucose.
So reducing blood sugar and high insulin levels is very
helpful in any fat loss program.

Cinnamon Bark Supplements

For people who are unable to get enough Cinnamon in their
regular diet or who have a need for more, Cinnamon Bark
supplements may be helpful.

Cinnamon Bark is just one of the supplements in...

Forward Foods LLC, Maker of Detour Bars, Files for Bankruptcy

Forward Foods LLC, the maker of Detour energy bars, filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday after a tainted peanut recall by its supplier, Peanut Corp of America, forced the company to recall many of its own products on fears of possible salmonella poisoning.

Forward Foods, which makes high-protein, snack and meal replacement bars primarily under the Detour name, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware, saying that a “significant” amount of its inventory must be condemned.

The company on Jan. 29 had voluntarily recalled all Detour bars that contained roasted peanuts from Peanut Corp.

A salmonella outbreak traced to one of Peanut Corp’s plants led to one of the biggest product recalls in U.S. history. The salmonella outbreak sickened 600 people, more than half of them children, and it may have killed nine people. The contamination has been traced to a Peanut Corp plant in Blakely, Georgia.

Sales of Detour products containing peanut product from Peanut Corp made up about 75 percent of Forward Foods’ protein bar sales, the company said in documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Upper Body Workout - Feb. 18, 2009

I just did an easy machine workout today because I’m still not feeling 100% from pulling my chest muscle last weekend. I just want to work around the muscle pull and avoid pulling it any more or risking a more serious injury.

Started with a 35 minute walk on the treadmill.

Then I did the following machine exercises.

Hammer Strength Shoulder Press Machine
Started really light and did lots of sets because I was really cautious about my pulled pec muscle. I didn’t want to jump up in weight too fast and risk straining the muscles.
This is how my weights went like:
40 x 5
60 x 5
80 x 5
100 x 5
120 x 5
140 x 5
160 x 5
180 x 5
200 x 5

All these exercises are proceeded with 1-2 lighter warm up sets.

Hammer Strength Seated Bicep Curls
3 sets of 10 reps with 60 lbs.

Hammer Strength Seated Tricep Extensions
3 sets of 10 reps with 80 lbs.

Hammer Strength Chest Supported Row
3 sets of 10 reps with 180 lbs.

Side Lateral Raise Machine
3 sets of 10 reps with 90 lbs.

1 Arm Dumbbell Wrist Curls
3 sets of 20 reps with 30 lbs.

Reverse Cable Curls With EZ Bar Attachment
3 sets of 20 reps with 50 lbs.

Leg Workout - Monday Feb 16, 2009

I did a leg workout today. Normally I like to do squats (or box squats) as my main exercise for my leg workout. However, I pulled my chest muscle during a workout this past weekend. Nothing too serious, but the muscle is tight and hurts when I over stretch it. So I didn't want to chance squats with the bar on my back and arms strecthed out, so I opted for leg presses as my main exercise instead.

Warm up / cardio with 15 minutes on the rowing machine.
(Note: this is important especially when training in the winter
time to get your core body temp up and ready for a workout.)

Leg Press
I pyramided up and down in weight going from:
5 plates per side for 10 reps
6 plates per side for 10 reps
7 plates per side for 10 reps
8 plates per side for 10 reps
9 plates per side for 10 reps
10 plates per side for 10 reps
9 plates per side for 10 reps
8 plates per side for 10 reps
7 plates per side for 10 reps
6 plates per side for 10 reps
5 plates per side for 10 reps

Leg Extensions
50 lbs. x 25 reps
100 lbs. x 10 reps
150 lbs. 10 reps
100 lbs. x 10 reps
50 lbs. x 25 reps

Then I finished up with 3 sets of 10-15 reps of bodyweight leg curls on the stability ball (like in my previous video post below).

President Obama’s Comments on Alex Rodriguez Steroid Use

President Barrack Obama commented on anabolic steroids during his first presidential press conference in response to a question by Washington Post reporter Michael A. Fletcher.

Fletcher surprisingly asked President Obama about Alex Rodriguez’ admission of anabolic steroid use during his Major League Baseball career, “What is your reaction to Alex Rodriguez’s admission that he used steroids as a member of the Texas Rangers?”

I think it’s depressing news on top of what’s been a flurry of depressing items when it comes to Major League Baseball. And if you’re a fan of Major League Baseball, I think it tarnishes an entire era to some degree. And it’s unfortunate, because I think there are a lot of ball players who played it straight.

And the thing I’m probably most concerned about is the message that it sends to our kids. What I’m pleased about is Major League Baseball seems to finally be taking this seriously, to recognize how big of a problem this is for the sport, and that our kids, hopefully, are watching and saying ‘You know what? There are no short cuts.’ That when you try to take short cuts, you may end up tarnishing your entire career. And your integrity’s not worth it. That’s the message I hope is communicated.”

The Washington Post asked the only question that did not involve domestic or foreign policy and was widely criticized as being inappropriate given the importance of other issues discussed during the prime-time presidential press conference. President Obama has previously stated that the government spends too much time on the steroid issue and would have probably liked to have completely dismissed the question. Instead, Obama provided and obligatory condemnation of steroids in baseball.

MLB Baseball Player Steroid Cycles Relatively Safe Compared to Pro Bodybuilders

The use of anabolic steroids by professional baseball players is relatively safe especially when compared to the extreme use of anabolic steroid by professional bodybuilders. The idea that anabolic steroids can be used responsibly and safely is categorically refuted by many anti-steroid crusaders in spite of scientifically evidence to the contrary.

Think about it: medical science has been using steroids safely in a clinical setting for the last 70 years.” Professor Charles Yesalis, steroid expert and epidemiologist at Penn State University, acknowledges that the media has overstated the dangers of steroids, “Anabolic steroids can be used relatively safely, but at even low doses they can have side effects. No drug, supplement, or substance is totally ’safe.’ Heck, you can even overdose on water.

Modern-day steroid hysteria has so demonized and stigmatized anabolic steroids that many people are convinced that all steroid use is inherently irresponsible. The use of anabolic steroids in moderation to achieve performance enhancing results is impossible according to critics who believe the dangerous side effects far outweigh the potential benefits at any level of use. Some critics believe that even a single instance of steroid use can cause permanent and irreversible health consequences that may even include fatal steroid overdoses.

Ironically, society has largely accepted the possibility that far more dangerous drugs can be used relatively safely in moderation. Alcohol and cigarettes are arguably far more dangerous than anabolic steroids yet the concept of responsible use for this substance has largely been accepted. Everyone knows that cirrhosis of the liver in cases of alcoholism and lung cancer from long-term cigarette smoking represent extreme cases of irresponsible and unhealthy drug use.

“You know, if my son came home and said, Dad, I’m either going to start smoking or I’m going to get on steroids,’ I’d have to say I would hope he would choose steroids,” acknowledges Dr. Charles Yesalis.

Few people propose the criminalization and prohibition of alcohol and/or cigarettes based on the side effects experienced by a small minority of individuals who used the substances excessively and/or irresponsibly. Anti-steroid crusaders seek to further criminalize anabolic steroids based on overstated side effects and/or health consequences experienced by extreme and excessive users of steroids.

Anabolic steroids, like many other substances, can be used relatively safely and effectively for its desired purpose. “As used by most people, including athletes, the adverse effects of anabolic steroids appear to be minimal,” according to Dr. Mauro DiPasquale. “They do not cause cancer, they do not cause kidney failure, they do not cause much of anything except an increase in lean muscle mass.”

The concern about steroid use in Major League Baseball is severely overblown given that most baseball players only used moderate dosages of steroids in short cycles. Yet anti-steroid crusaders inevitably point to the extreme steroid use by some amateur and professional bodybuilders to support their assertions of the deadly and dangerous side effects. Steroid use does not occur uniformly among all groups, much like alcohol use, and extreme users should not be the basis for criminalizing steroid use for all.

WWE Superstar John Cena Thinks Steroid Users Should Go to Jail

John Cena was sickened by MLB player Alex Rodriguez’ admission that he used anabolic steroids according to a recent interview.

The actor and rapper is employed by the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) which has experienced its share of steroid-related controversy including a recent Congressional investigation into steroid use in professional wrestling and the apparent widespread use of steroids in pro wrestling.

Nonetheless, John Cena believes that steroid users should go to jail.

What happened with Alex Rodriguez and the steroids revelations sickened him. He thinks if everyone really wants to get serious about cleaning up the game, “they should send the guys to jail.”

Cena is about as cut as they come, but he said he’s not steroid enhanced.

I’m not only a guy who will say I’m clean, but I’ll beat my chest to the world that I’m clean,” he said. “I have very, very strong opinions on that.”

John Cena’s belief that individual steroid use should be criminalize is somewhat surprising since Cena appeared to share director Chris Bell’s disdain for the hypocrisy of steroid laws.

Bodyweight Leg Curls - Hamstring & Glute Workout

Looking for an awesome hamstring and glute exercise? Then try doing stability ball leg curls. This movement hits the hamstrings and glutes from a unique angle and because you are moving your entire body with the exercise it will have a higher level of neuromuscular activation in the muscles compared to exercises that you just move your limbs (such as the lying leg curl machine).

All you need to do this exercise is a stability ball. So it is perfect for a home gym or public gym. Brace your arms on the floor and place your feet on the center of the ball with your legs straight. Lift your butt off the floor and then curl your legs back behind you. This will heavily work the hamstrings and glutes.

Give it a try in your next leg workout and then leave me a comment below to let me know how you like it...

Juliette Bergmann Inducted Into IFBB Hall of Fame

The ultimate late bloomer in bodybuilding, Juliette Bergmann actually had two careers in the IFBB. In the Ms. Olympia, between 1985 and 1988, her best showing was sixth in ‘86, and between 2001 and 2003, she stunningly came out of retirement to win the lightweight and overall in ‘01, followed by lightweight victories in 2002 and 2003. Her 2001 triumph at age 42, backed up by her having one of the most symmetrical female physiques of all time, more than secured her Hall of Fame status.

Born the last day of November in 1958 in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands, to an Indonesian father and a Dutch mother, Bergmann learned early about the pain of loss - an older brother died when she was four, and a younger brother when she was 12. She found it necessary to grow up faster than usual by helping care for her younger siblings. Her studies were in journalism, financial management and fitness training. In 1975, she began a decade-long marriage to Jan Meijer, which explains the early references to her last name as "Meyer".

At age 23, Bergmann felt the need to drop some bodyweight and, impressed with how some women looked at a contest, began to bodybuild. She competed twice, winning both shows. In 1984 and 1985, she won the Dutch National Championships, which earned her a spot at the European Championships in Madrid, Spain. There, she won the lightweight division.

Your First Bodybuilding Competition

I've been competing in bodybuilding competitions since I was 17 years old and I love it...

There is just something very satisfying about setting a personal goal to get in your best physical shape ever and then follow through to see that goal fulfilled.

Have you ever secretly wanted to get in that kind of shape and take your physique to the level where you could compete in a natural bodybuilding competition?

Now I know you are probably not looking to go on to be the next Mr. Olympia, but nonetheless wouldn't it be an awesome feeling to get into your best shape ever and then confidently display the results of all your hard work at a local competition in front of a supportive audience of friends, family, and fellow gym members.

I've personally coached and helped dozens of competitors prepare for their very first bodybuilding competition and when it's all said and done I hear the same things over and over again...

"Competing in bodybuilding was one of the most
challenging things I have ever done, and it was
also one of the most personally rewarding!"

While the exact wording may vary, the message is the same. Bottom line I've never met a single person who has regretted competing in a bodybuilding competition. In fact it is very often one of the most memorable moments of their life, something they are very proud of.

That's why I've put together a step-by-step bodybuilding competition training guide that explains everything you need to know about preparing for and looking your best at your first bodybuilding competition.

Your First Bodybuilding Competition is a book and DVD package that breaks down the whole competition preparation process into an easy to follow step-by-step plan. It will clear up a lot of myths and misconceptions with regards to competitive bodybuilding and help you confidently step on the contest stage in Your Best Shape Ever!
